Gingee Fort begun 1190 AD; enlarged by Chola dynasty in the 13th century; mainly 16th century by Vijayanagara: 1677 seized by Maratha king Shivaji; 1690, seized by Mughals; French took over in 1750 and built sentry boxes; ceded to British in 1762.
